Some Tunes Pt. 1


Shane Linehan aus Cork im Süden Irlands fiel mir das erste Mal positiv mit dem Start seines Labels Basic Grooves Recordings auf. Der in der Heimatstadt von Fish Go Deep ansässige DJ und Produzent bewegt sich bei seinen eigenen Tracks äußerst stilsicher durch US Oldschool Underground House und Deep House. Der vorliegende Titel "The Future" stammt von der EP "Basic Grooves Vol. 2"  und soll an dieser Stelle freundschaftlich empfohlen werden. Durchaus erfreulich kann es übrigens auch sein Shane Linehan als DJ etwas Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken.

Shane Linehan from Cork in Ireland first caught my attention after setting up his own label Basic Grooves Recordings. The guy who lives in the hometown of producer duo Fish Go Deep is doing a tasty mixture of US oldschool underground house and deep house. The title "The Future" is taken from the EP "Basic Grooves Vol. 2" and it's really worth checking it out. Besides you might also be amused by paying some attention to his DJ mixes.


Dutch Rhythm Combo aka Felix Haaksmann zeichnet sich verantwortlich für die zweite Empfehlung unserer Some Tunes Reihe. Von Berlin aus betreibt er das Label Highscore Publishing auf dem auch das folgende Stück "Bonaire" veröffentlicht wurde. Wie ich finde eine wirklich tolle, vollmundige House Nummer. Piano, Posaune, E-Gitarre und Bass - alles ist mit dabei und schön rund in den Kontext von House und Disco integriert.

Dutch Rhythm Combo aka Felix Haaksmann is the one we have to thank for recommendation number two of our Some Tunes series. He is the man behind the Berlin based label Highscore Publishing where the following track "Bonaire" was released on. A real great house tune including trombone, piano, electric guitars and bass - no more to say than well done!


Nick Beringer aus Berlin hat mit "Defense" eine echt tolle Detroit House Spule fabriziert, so dass ich an dieser Stelle sogar noch in die Verlegenheit komme so etwas wie "sauber!" ergänzend hinzufügen zu wollen...jaa...erschienen ist das Ganze auf Wax Classics, dem Tochterlabel von Skylax, die seit 2004 zum geschmackssicheren Begleiter von so manchem Liebhaber des oldschooligen House Sounds geworden sind.

Nick Beringer from Berlin has done some great easygoing detroit house monotony with "Defense" that unavoidably forces me to nod my head...It was released on Wax Classics which is a sublabel of Skylax where quite e few lovers of oldschool inspired house sounds have found a companion in since 2004.


Die musikalische Ausirchtung von Flavio Diners Track "Lo-Fi Soul Food" lässt sich bereits am Titel recht schön erahnen. Groovy, deep, leicht verspielt und herrlich passend zu so vielen Momenten in denen es unaufgeregt zu gehen soll. Erschienen ist das ganze auf Palham Music aus Eisenach. Meine Empfehlung: zurücklehnen und genießen!

Flavio Diners has done something for the hearts of deep lovers with "Lo-Fi Soul Food". It's groovy, deep, a little playful and a well fitting soundtrack for so many relaxed moments. The track was released on Palham Music from Eisenach and I simply recommend to lay back and enjoy!


Wer dezenten House mit einer ordentlichen Portion Soul zu genießen weiss und Marvin Belton bis jetzt noch nicht kennen sollte, den würde ich gern verbindlich dazu verpflichten unmittelbar im Anschluss noch ein bisschen extra Zeit zu investieren... Beheimatet in Detroit und bisher musikalisch auf Scott Fergusens Label Ferrispark Records zu Hause gewesen, lieferte Marvin Belton u.a. mit "Bleed To Be Free" oder "Love Will Find A Way" zwei - meiner Ansicht nach - wirklich zeitlose und wunderschöne Genre Perlen ab. Der hier herzlich empfohlene Titel "Image Fades Away (Soulful Version)" ist im Rahmen des Projetkts Joy of Sound Productions entstanden, bei dem sich Marvin Belton, Vincent Halliburton und James Thomas zusammen geschlossen haben um der gemeinsamen Vorliebe für House, R&B und Jazz nach zu gehen. Achja, erschienen übrigens auf Moodymann's Label Mahogani Music.

For everybody who do not know about Marvin Belton while having an affinity for decent House combined with Soul I strictly recommend to spend some extra time on him afterwards... As a Detroit native Marvin Belton's musical home has mostly been Scott Ferguson's label Ferrispark Records and with songs like "Bleed To Be Free" or "Love Will Find A Way" two - in my opinion - really timeless and beautiful pearls of the genre were created. The title "Image Fades Away (Soulful Version)" was done by the project Joy of Sound Productions which consists of Marvin Belton, Vincent Halliburton and James Thomas and is focussed on sounds between House, R&B and Jazz. PS.: released on Moodymann's label Mahogani Music.


Abschließend noch eine kleine aber dafür wirklich sehr feine Empfehlung, die obwohl sie die eigentliche musikalische Ausirchtung unseres Soultunes Blogs leicht verlässt, trotzdem ihren Platz finden soll: Deo & Z-Man mit ihrem neusten Werk "The Drums" auf Manual Music. Die zwei Brüder, deren aktuelle Wahlheimat Hamburg ist, haben bereits mit einigen Dancetracks auf Labels wie Opossum Recordings, Dekadent Schallplatten, Kammer Musik, Acker Records, ... und unlängst auch auf dem Compost Blacklabel auf sich aufmerksam machen können. Das vorliegende Stück zeigt jedoch eine neue Facette ihres musikalischen Schaffens auf, in der immer mehr das Format des Tracks hin zu Songstrukturen aufgebrochen wird und sich der Blick nicht mehr nur auf den Dancefloor richten mag. Man merkt immer deutlicher auch musikalsiche Einflüsse, die angefangen beim guten alten Krautrock über die analogen Sounds und Klangästhetik der 80'er, hin zu zeitgenössischen Ansätzen führen. Ausgestattet mit einem umfangreichen Fuhrpark analoger Klangerzeuger basteln die beiden mittlerweile an allem was ihnen gefällt und flashed. Diesen oft in der aktuellen Musik vermissten, offenen Ansatz kann ich nur unterstützen und schließe mit: man darf gespannt sein, was wohl noch folgen mag...

Last but definitly not least a recommendation that might be a little bit out of our general focus but also deserves to find its place on our Soultunes Blog: Deo & Z-Man with their new works "The Drums" on Manual Music. The two brothers from Hamburg have already aroused peoples interest with quite a few dance productions on labels like Opossum Recordings, Dekadent Schallplatten, Kammer Musik, Acker Records, ... and recently on the Compost Blacklabel. But the approach on "The Drums" is showing a new facet of their music. A sound that develops away from a track made for dancefloors and appears more as a song where musical influences of the good old days of krautrock, 80's anlogue sound aesthetics right up to contemporary productions can be heard. The two guys just like to ride their analogue machines and enjoy whatever may come up without caring much about genre borders. I like this open minded approach that might be lacking quite a lot of other current stuff and would like to finally close with the words: So one may be curious what is to come up in the future...
